13 players who have featured for both Liverpool and Stoke

Right-back Glen Johnson joined Liverpool from Portsmouth in 2009 and marked his home league debut with a goal and an assist in a man-of-the-match performance against Stoke. He went on to make 200 appearances for the Reds during six seasons at Anfield, winning the League Cup in 2012. He left Liverpool to join Stoke this summer.

Despite taking his time to get on the scoresheet for Liverpool after joining in 2006, Peter Crouch became popular with the fans due to his hard work and bursts of goal scoring. Most famously, he managed a perfect hat-trick for Liverpool against Arsenal. After leaving the Reds he spent several years at Spurs before signing for Stoke - proving to be an effective and occasionally spectacular scorer.

Charlie Adam arrived at Anfield from Blackpool in 2011. Despite his cultured left foot he struggled to have a major influence on Merseyside. Now back in form at Stoke, he scored one of the goals of the season from his own half against Chelsea in 2015. The Scot also scored Stoke's fourth goal in the 6-1 defeat on the final day of last season.

Oussama Assaidi joined Liverpool from Dutch club Heerenveen in 2012, but spent most of his time with Liverpool out on loan at Stoke. His first season was fairly successful, scoring four goals in 19 games. However, after a less productive second season he departed English football for Dubai.

Walters became the first Liverpool player to score a hat-trick in the fledgling Premier League in 1992 - during a 4-0 win over Coventry City. He won the FA Cup (1992) and League Cup (1995) during his four seasons at Anfield and also spent time out on loan at Stoke during the 1993-94 season - scoing two goals in nine games.

Michael Owen burst on to the scene for Liverpool in 1997 and within a year he had become one of the hottest properties in world football, due to his goalscoring record and an incredible strike against Argentina at World Cup 1998. Later in his career, injuries blunted Owen's astonishing pace but didn’t hinder his finishing ability when he was able to find fitness. He finished his career at Stoke in 2013.

Bruce Grobbelaar is perhaps Liverpool’s most legendary goalkeeper, playing 628 games for the Reds and putting off Roma's penalty takers with his famous wobbly-legs routine in the 1984 European Cup final. Towards the end of his Liverpool career Grobbelaar played four games for Stoke on loan.

Jermaine Pennant's spell at Liverpool was varied, with the winger occasionally showing glimpses of the skill which convinced Arsene Wenger to spend a £1m on him as a teenager for Arsenal. He eventually left Anfield on a free transfer in 2009. He joined Stoke the following year and again showed glimpses of his talent before falling out of favour and moving on once more.

8. Jermaine Pennant

Forward Paul Stewart joined Liverpool from Tottenham Hotspur in 1992 and scored on his Anfield debut, against Sheffield United, then netted a brace against Apollon Limassol in the European Cup Winners' Cup. But that was that as injuries took their toll and he had to play back up to Ian Rush and Dean Saunders before being loaned out. He left Liverpool in 1996 and later spent a season at Stoke.

9. Paul Stewart

Dominic Matteo joined Liverpool as a youngster in 1990 and came through in the same youth team as Robbie Fowler and Jamie Carragher. Adept at either left-back or centre-back, he left for Leeds United in 2000 and scored in the Champions League. He joined Stoke in 2007 and was captain as the Potters were promoted to the Premier League in 2008, despite an injury which eventually ended his career.

Salif Diao was signed by Reds manager Gerard Houllier after impressing in the 2002 World Cup with Senegal. However, he never really fitted into his preferred central-midfield role and Rafa Benitez replaced him with Momo Sissoko in 2005. After a successful spell on loan with Stoke, Diao joined the club permanently in 2007 and stayed for five years.

Toxteth lad Howard Gayle starred in the 1981 European Cup semi-final against Bayern Munich and earned a place on the bench as the Reds won the final. Sadly, it was to be the pinnacle of his Liverpool career and he began to move from club to club. He played six games for Stoke, scoring twice.

Victor Moses came through the academy at Crystal Palace and was talked of as one of English football’s big prospects. He made his way to Chelsea via Wigan, and spent the 2013-14 campaign on loan at Liverpool, scoring on his debut against Swansea. He spent the following season on loan at Stoke, scoring four goals in 23 games.
