Liverpool-born defender David Rylands signed professional forms for the club in March 1970 when he was 17-years-old.
He struggled to force his way into the first-team picture as Bill Shankly continued his rebuilding process in the wake of the club's FA cup defeat at Watford in February 1970, after which the great Scottish manager knew he could do longer rely on the players who had brought his club so much success in the middle of the 1960's. Shankly chose Rylands instead of injured Larry Lloyd when Doncaster Rovers (bottom of the old Fourth Division at the time) arrived at Anfield for their FA Cup third round tie on January 5, 1974. Only two goals from Doncaster-born Kevin Keegan saved the day and by the time Liverpool travelled to Yorkshire for the replay three days later, Lloyd had been restored to his place at the heart of the defence.
