David Speedie made himself an instant Kop favourite when he scored on his debut at Old Trafford and then hit two against Everton in his second game!
The fiery Scotsman was a surprising purchase by Dalglish, and it proved to be Kenny's last signing for Liverpool before he announced his resignation on February 22, 1991. Liverpool was Speedie's fifth Football League club. His brief career at Liverpool can hardly be called a failure because he scored in every other league game, a total of six goals in 12 League matches from the time of his signing until the final day of the 1990-91 season.
His goal at Old Trafford came after magical wing brilliance from John Barnes down the left and 'Speedo' gave the cross what it deserved when he smashed the ball into the net.
Speedie was one of numerous casualties of the early days of the Graeme Souness era. Before 1991 was over, he had moved to Blackburn Rovers to reunite with Dalglish, and he was top scorer as the club reached the top-flight.
The following season Dalglish signed Alan Shearer and Speedie went the opposite way to Southampton and he would also continue to play for other teams including Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion, West Ham United and Leicester City. After leaving Leicester at the end of the 1993-94 season, Speedie represented a couple of non-League clubs before retiring as a player to work as a football agent.
David played for the country of his birth (Scotland) 10 times. Although he failed to score for his national team, he scored nearly 150 goals for nine different Football League clubs. He moved around so frequently that it was hardly a surprise his time as a Liverpool player was only a short one. He also had problems with his temperament, which frequently drew him into confrontation with opponents, teammates and officials.
