Becton joined the famous Preston North End team which had won the League Championship in the first two seasons of the Football league, earning the nickname "The Invincibles".
Becton joined Preston in 1891, but never won the league with the Deepdale club, who finished runners-up three seasons running 1891-1893 before sliding down the league ladder. Incidentally Becton scored for Preston when Second Division Liverpool famously knocked Preston out of the FA Cup on February 10, 1894.
Becton moved to Liverpool for quite a substantial sum of 100 pounds in March 1895 also making his debut for the English national team in the same month. He scored on his Liverpool debut against Sunderland on March, 25 1895 and finished with four goals from only five appearances by the end of that season.
A further 34 league goals came during the next three seasons, with another four strikes in FA cup games. His final figures were 42 goals from 86 matches, which included four appearances in the 'Test' matches played at the end of each season to decide promotion and relegation.
Frank died of tuberculosis only 36 years old on November 6, 1909.
