Gregory Vignal made his breakthrough at Liverpool during the treble campaign of 2000-01 when he looked an outstanding prospect, but for one reason or another things haven't gone as planned since then for Gregory. He has three winners medals from his time with the club as he was an unused substitute in the FA Cup, UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup victories in 2001.
He came to Anfield with good pedigree having enjoyed international success during the summer of 2000 when he helped the French Under-18 team to victory in the European Youth Championships in Germany.
He made his Reds debut in the FA Cup 3rd Round win over Rotherham United at Anfield in January 2000, after arriving at the club earlier in the season from Montpellier.
The beginning of the end for Vignal at Anfield came after a broken foot ruled him out for most of the 2001-2002 season, and then unable to break back into the first team, ended the 2002-2003 campaign on a three-month loan with French side Bastia.
Vignal also spent the whole of the 2003-04 season on a season long loan at Spanish La Liga strugglers Espanyol.
He eventually joined Portsmouth after he was released from his Liverpool contract a year early in the summer of 2005.
Gregory actually made more league appearances for Portsmouth (14) in the 2005-06 season than he had made in the whole of his Reds career (11).
However, he left Portsmouth on a free transfer in the summer of 2006 and again returned to France, this time to represent Lens. But Lens then loaned him out to German club Kaiserslautern for the second half of the 2006-07 season.
In July, 2007 the 26-year old was again to be found in English football, this time undergoing a one-week trial with Southampton, a successful trial that led to a season-long loan deal being agreed. As Southampton attempted, unsuccessfully as it turned out, to return to the Premier League, Vignal appeared in 20 of their league matches in The Championship in 2007-08, scoring three goals (all penalties). He also scored for the Saints in their FA Cup victory over Leicester City before joining French club Lens.
Other clubs: Montpellier, Bastia (loan), Rennes (loan), Espanyol (loan), Rangers (loan), Portsmouth, Lens, Southampton (loan)
