McNaughton was a goalkeeper who made just a single appearance in Liverpool's first 11.

The regular No. 1 for the first-half of the 1920-21 season was the legendary Elisha Scott but Harold took over from him for the Anfield 'derby' with Everton on October 23, 1920, and kept a clean sheet as the Reds won 1-0 with the winner coming 10 minutes before half-time from Dick Forshaw. According to McNaughton's contract Liverpool agreed to pay him £5 per week and a £10 signing on fee when he arrived from Edinburgh St Bernard's.
