Stott was only at Anfield for one season (1893-94), which was also the club's first as a Football League club. He distinguished himself by being the club's top scorer that year, netting 14 times in just 17 appearances as the club were promoted to the top division at the first time of asking. He played in 13 of the first 14 league games but only made a further three appearances during the second-half of the season, although he did also play in two FA Cup ties. The highlight of his single season came with a hat-trick in the 6-0 trouncing of Middlesbrough Ironopolis at Anfield in October 1893. He also scored twice in games against Small Heath, Rotherham County and Northwich Victoria.
He later became Newcastle United' captain from 1896-98, making 125 appearances for the Magpies in four years, gaining promotion from Second Division in the 1897-98 season. He was a tough customer on the field and in 1896 he was censured by the Newcastle board for "continual fouling of his opponent". Sadly he contracted a brain tumour and died in a lunatic asylum on 9th October 1908.
