Gerard Houllier's first signing was called "the Machine" because of his work-rate.

He arrived as cover for Paul Ince in midfield but struggled with injury. He made his debut three months after making the move to Merseyside.

Another substitute appearance later he left the club for the same fee Houllier paid for him.
