John's one and only appearance for Liverpool's first-team came as a replacement for the regular outside-right Arthur Goddard when Liverpool faced Birmingham City in a First Division fixture at Anfield on 26th January 1907. The Reds won 2-0 with goals from Jack Parkinson and William McPherson.
