John Welsh came to Liverpool at the age of 10 and after coming through the Academy was the reserve team captain.
Despite some promising displays and being a regular for England Under-21s he found opportunities under Gerard Houllier limited at Anfield, particularly after the arrival of Salif Diao.
Welsh joined Hull in the 2005-2006 season. After making 50 appearances in the Championship in two seasons, he was loaned out to League Two side Chester City.
As a Hull City player, John was sent out on loan again in October 2008, this time to Carlisle United. He made only four League appearances for the Cumbrians before joining Foootball League Two club Bury, also on loan. He appeared in Bury's first-team on five occasions before the end of the 2008-09 season, at which point he returned to Hull City and was released by them in June, 2009.
He joined Tranmere Rovers under Kop legend John Barnes in July 2009.
