Nigel Spackman was a powerful midfielder who played in the great 1987-88 team.
He had already played over 300 matches for Bournemouth and Chelsea before arriving at Liverpool to strengthen the squad which had just won the League & FA cup 'Double' in 1986. Nigel was never much more than a squad player at Anfield and replaced the injured Ronnie Whelan with great distinction in 1987, and made a great contribution to that wonderful team playing alongside Steve McMahon in central midfield.
Spackman won a championship medal in 1988 but also suffered the disappointment of two Wembley cup final defeats with the Reds - the 1987 League Cup to Arsenal and the FA Cup upset caused by Wimbledon a year later which deprived Liverpool of their second 'Double' in three seasons. Nigel was a versatile player who was comfortable in a number of different positions. Halfway through the 1988-89 season, when it was clear that his chances of being a first-team regular were still limited, he decided to return to London and joined Queens Park Rangers. After a short spell at Loftus Road, he then moved north of the border to play for Glasgow giants Rangers.
