Right-back Philipp Degen was signed by Rafael Benitez on a free transfer in the summer of 2008 but failed to make any impact at Anfield.

Despite representing his country Switzerland, Degen never looked comfortable in the Premier League and had his contract terminated by mutual consent in August 2011.

This after just 13 appearances, the first of which came against Crewe in the League Cup on September 23, 2008.
