Jamie Carragher paid tribute to the 'strong character' shown by Stephen Darby following the youngster's encouraging performance in Saturday's FA Cup draw with Reading.
The 21-year-old full-back was handed his second start of the season at the Madejski Stadium and turned in a composed display in the 1-1 stalemate.
Darby also featured in the Champions League clash with Fiorentina at Anfield last month, and though also impressive on that occasion, the Maghull-born defender was left heartbroken after an error led to the Italians' winning goal.
However, Carragher believes his defensive colleague displayed great resolve to put the mistake behind him and stake a claim for more first-team action after shining against the Royals.
"He played very well and I'm really pleased for him," said the Reds vice-captain.
"I thought he also did well against Fiorentina recently, and he was just unfortunate at the end of that game with the mistake.
"It wasn't the easiest game against Reading, and it was very difficult to play in, but he showed great character to come back from it.
"It was great for him and you also have to give credit to the manager for picking him.
"It would have been easy (not to select him) after what happened against Fiorentina, but if you look at that game he was one of our best players on the night.
"And he was superb against Reading, which shows that he's not only just a good player, but also has very strong character.
"He was a very composed in a tough game. Sometimes it's easier to play well when the team plays well, but to come through it and perform well at a very difficult place to play can be a real battle and we're all pleased for him because he's such a nice lad."
Liverpool were left frustrated after being held by the Championship side in Berkshire.
Reading took a first-half lead through Simon Church before Steven Gerrard drew the Reds level 10 minutes later.
However, Rafa Benitez's charges could not find a winner and must now contest an Anfield replay against Reading to determine which team will take a place in the FA Cup fourth round.
Carragher added: "We didn't play great. It's a tough ground to come to with the atmosphere and the pitch wasn't brilliant, but credit to Reading because they played very well.
"It's not ideal to have a replay, but it's better than going out of the cup."
