Aston Villa have told wantaway winger Stewart Downing he must hand in a transfer request to secure an £18million move to Liverpool.
Despite declaring his intention to try to keep the 26-year-old, new Villa boss Alex McLeish has now accepted it might be best to let him leave.
McLeish plans to spend half of the £18m asking price on Wigan's Charles N'Zogbia as a direct replacement and to reinvest the rest of the money in other areas of the team.
Keeper Ben Foster and central defender Roger Johnson are on his radar from former club Birmingham.
Villa fans would be left reeling by Downing's exit following the sale of winger Ashley Young to Manchester United.
