Liverpool will test Basle's determination to keep winger Mohamed Salah this week after Brendan Rodgers was given the go ahead by owner John W Henry to launch a bid for the Egypt international.
Basle do not want to sell Salah, who they see as key to helping them qualify for the Champions League next season and rate him around £12million.
Liverpool would want to pay nearer £7m, but following talks with Henry and chairman Tom Werner on Friday Rodgers will put the Swiss side's resolve under the microscope.
Salah, 21, would offer Rodgers even more attacking threat even though a more pressing priority would be strengthening at both full-back positions.
