Juventus are faced with a difficult decision after their elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Galatasaray on Wednesday, and that could see midfielder Claudio Marchisio shipped out to Liverpool, Chelsea or Manchester United.
Reports in Italy suggest that Juventus stand to lose approximately £17m as a result of their earlier-than-expected elimination from Europe's elite competition even though they will still continue in the Europa League.
And that will leave the Turin club looking for creative ways to make up the shortfall that could see players leave the club in January.
According to Tuttosport, several players have already been ruled out including Carlos Tevez, Fernando Llorente, Sebastian Giovinco, Arturo Vidal and Paul Pogba.
Other players like Mirko Vucinic and Fabio Quagliarella could still leave the club but are not likely to put a substantial dent in the budget deficit.
And that leaves Claudio Marchisio, who meets several of the clubs' criteria.
Whilst Juventus would be reluctant to let Marchisio leave given his iconic status as a player who came through the youth system at the club, they appreciate that few individual players have the same Europe-wide appeal that could bring in the necessary fee.
Indeed, Antonio Conte is ready to commit to Vidal and Pogba as his midfield of the future meaning that 27-year-old Marchisio is somewhat expendable from a tactical perspective.
Manchester United were linked with a move for Marchisio in the summer after missing out on Cesc Fabregas, and there was also talk that Jose Mourinho wanted to make the Italian international one of his first signings on his return to Chelsea.
Liverpool also have an interest in the hard-tackling midfielder, particularly with Steven Gerrard set to miss time.
However, it now seems increasingly likely that Marchisio could be on his way out of Juventus in the near future and it simply remains to be seen whether United, Chelsea or Liverpool will make a concerted effort to bring him on board.
