Samuel Eto'o has become the latest striker under discussion by Liverpool as they seek to bolster their forward options.
Anfield officials are considering a move for the Cameroon forward, 33, who is a free agent after reaching the end of a one-year deal at Chelsea at the start of the summer.
Dutch champions Ajax are also keen on Eto'o and sporting director Marc Overmars has held talks with the player about continuing his career in Holland.
Eto'o was scheduled to watch Ajax beat Vitesse Arnhem on Sunday, although they could only offer him a contract worth about £35,000 a week.
Liverpool's interest comes as manager Brendan Rodgers weighs up the alternatives in the transfer market as he looks to bring in competition for Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert.
But he wants another forward in addition to sealing a £12.8million deal for left-back Alberto Moreno, which is expected to be rubber-stamped after he plays for Sevilla in tonight's UEFA Super Cup clash with Real Madrid.
Eto'o scored 12 goals, including a winner against Liverpool and a hat-trick against Manchester United, for Chelsea last season in 35 appearances under Jose Mourinho.
He would provide short-term cover with Liverpool taking delivery of Belgium youngster Divok Origi next summer following his return to Lille on loan.
A two-time Champions League winner with Barcelona and Inter Milan, Eto'o would also offer experience to what is a relatively young squad ahead of Liverpool's return to Europe's elite.
Liverpool will make a decision on whether to proceed in the coming days, aware Ajax are hoping for a swift resolution to their own interest.
"Samuel seemed very hungry to play for Ajax," said Overmars.
"He is fit and has a great drive to succeed once again.
"If it is possible to sign a world-class player like Eto'o, then why not? It will be fantastic."
