Dirk Kuyt nodded home from two yards out to earn Liverpool a huge 1-0 derby day victory over Everton in a game that saw the Reds reduced to 10 men for almost an hour at Anfield.
Sotirios Kyrgiakos was given his first-half marching orders for a two-footed lunge on Marouane Fellaini, which saw the Everton man stretchered off the pitch, although Fellaini was lucky to escape a red card himself for a stamp in the same incident.
In a game of few chances it was Kuyt who produced the telling contribution when glancing home from Steven Gerrard's corner, before Steven Pienaar was sent off deep into injury time for a second bookable offence.
