Mike Marsh is delighted with the progress his Liverpool Under-18s side have made this season. The youngsters finished third in the Premier Academy League Group C after completing their campaign with a last-gasp 3-2 defeat at the hands of Newcastle.
The Reds ended up only three points adrift of winners Manchester City.
"If you had offered me 51 points at the start of the season I would have taken it," Marsh said.
"In general I'm really pleased. Dropping points in games when we were under-strength cost us in the end as we could have been right up there.
"But we were looking for progression and they have developed nicely. There's been steady progress throughout.
"We'll keep training until the first team's season is completed on May 13."
Nacho and Sam Gainford were on target against Newcastle but they were beaten by a last-minute winner.
"To be fair to the lads we played as well as we've done all season," Marsh added.
"We could have been comfortable winners and with the chances we had we would have been disappointed to only get a draw.
"But we had five or six changes from the week before so that probably explains the lack of cohesion in the backline as we conceded a couple of sloppy goals.
"We were without the second years who aren't being kept on.
"Four or five have gone now but the good news is they have all secured deals at other clubs and we're delighted for them."
