Liverpool face City fight for '€35 million' World Cup star

Manchester City are set to enter the race for reported Liverpool target Luis Suarez.

The 23-year-old Ajax captain has been the subject of interest from a number of clubs in recent weeks and now, according to 4-4-2, City have launched a €35 million bid for his services.

Manchester City have also been linked with Wolfsburg hotshot Edin Dzeko as they look to bring in striking reinforcements after Carlos Tevez's revelation that he intends to quit Eastlands.

The Manchester City skipper's admission means the club are now likely to delve into the transfer market come January and - with their incomparable financial clout - they would be expected to gazump Liverpool in the chase for Suarez.

Until Manchester City made their reported offer for the Uruguay international, Liverpool had allegedly made an initial move to bring him to Anfield in January.

According to Tuttomercato, Liverpool made an offer of around €15 million just last week - although Ajax are reportedly holding out for at least another €10 million.

However, these reports would appear to contradict comments made last week by Roy Hodgson concerning potential Liverpool targets.

When asked if he was attempting to bring Suarez, Ronaldinho or Ashley Young to Anfield, the Liverpool boss said: "Ronaldinho and Suarez are players who we have never even thought about but I would think there is not a manager in the Premier League who has not given Ashley Young a thought at some stage or another."

Despite this, Liverpool are thought to be keen to bolster their attacking ranks in the transfer window after Hodgson admitted the Reds rely too heavily on the goalscoring of Anfield hero Fernando Torres.

New Liverpool owners NESV are expected to back their manager in the transfer market with upwards of £25 million as he looks to add more potent striking options to his squad in January.

Bolton striker Johan Elmander and Japan sensation Keisuke Honda have both been linked with moves to Anfield in January as Liverpool continue their pursuit of a new partner for Torres.
