Liverpool are in discussions with Newcastle United over a proposed £11.5million deal to sign defender Jose Enrique.
The Red's boss, Kenny Dalglish, has been on the hunt for a left-back all summer and now looks set to sign his top target.
The Scot was close to signing Gael Clichy from Arsenal, but the Frenchman decided a move to Manchester City was in his best interests.
Rumours have circulated all summer about a move for Enrique but Liverpool were put off by a £15million price tag for the 25-year-old, who has 12 months left on his contract.
The former Spain U21 international was keen on moving to a Champions League club but has been persuaded by Dalglish and the owners ambitions for Anfield.
Enrique is currently in America on the Toon Army's pre-season tour but our sources tell us he is ready to fly to Liverpool to undergo a medical and agree personal terms once the clubs agree a fee.
The news will be a blow for Magpies boss Alan Pardew, who wanted to keep Enrique, but now looks likely to re-bid for Swansea City defender Neil Taylor.
