Villarreal defender Mateo Musacchio is a reported summer transfer target for Liverpool.
The 20-year-old South American star has been monitored by a number of leading European clubs and was said to be the subject of bids from Juventus and AC Milan in the January transfer window.
Musacchio has risen to prominence in La Liga after a string of fine performances, and the Daily Mail reports that Liverpool are planning a move for this exciting prospect.
Anfield boss Kenny Dalglish is keen to add to his defensive options and will focus on strengthening his back line in the summer, with Musacchio seen as a potential long-term replacement for Jamie Carragher.
Villarreal aren't thought to be keen on selling the player however, and his long-term contract with the Yellow Submarine means they will not be forced to part with their man cheaply.
Liverpool owners NESV have already shown their financial commitment and are prepared to back the manager in a bid to return the Anfield club to its former glories.
Reports in the Spanish media suggest that the El Madrigal outfit would accept a 'generous' offer for the player's services, which could open the door for a summer move to Merseyside.
Liverpool Director of Football Strategy Damien Comolli has given the green light for Dalglish to pursue his interest in Musacchio, who was a product of the River Plate youth system.
Having made his debut at the age of 16, after only ten first team appearances the bright young talent made the switch to Spain where he has developed into one of the most exciting young defenders in Europe.
Liverpool fans will be hoping that a move for Musacchio can be agreed, as Anfield chiefs look to build for the long-term future of their club.
