Metro: Reds lead chase for U21 starlet

Liverpool are leading the race to sign former Chelsea youngster Jacopo Sala.

The Reds have been tracking the former Italian U21 international in recent weeks and reports in Italy suggest they will make a firm offer this summer.

Sala, who has won rave reviews for his performances for Verona this season, can play in midfield or as a right-back and has also been watched by London rivals West Ham and Tottenham.

The 23-year-old spent four years at Stamford Bridge but never featured for the first team and moved to Hamburger SV before returning to Italy.

He is out of contract at the end of next season and it is understood Verona would prefer to cash in on him in the summer rather than risk him leaving on a free transfer in 12 months' time.
