Liverpool are exploring the prospect of landing Swedish star Ola Toivonen on loan until the end of the season.
The versatile 27-year-old, who has been linked with Newcastle, can play in midfield or along the front line, and would provide the cover boss Brendan Rodgers needs in his injury-hit squad.
Toivonen, who has been on the Anfield giants' radar since Kenny Dalglish tried to sign him in 2010, and will be a free agent in the summer when his contract with PSV Eindhoven is up.
The Dutch club are desperate to get some kind of fee for a player who was once rated at £15million, and would be prepared to sell him in the January window.
But Liverpool are keen on proposing a small fee to take the player on loan for the remainder of the campaign - giving him the chance to earn a long-term future at Anfield.
