Newcastle will reportedly move for ex-Liverpool defender John Arne Riise should Jose Enqriue leave St James' Park.
The Spanish left-back's future has been the subject of intense speculation in recent weeks with a whole host of clubs seemingly pursuing his signature.
Reports in the Spanish press last week claimed that Liverpool had beaten off Manchester United and AC Milan in the race for Enrique and were expected to complete a deal worth in the region of £6 million in the summer.
And now, according to Corriere dello Sport, Newcastle have lined up former Anfield favourite Riise to succeed Enrique if the 25-year-old joins Liverpool.
Riise enjoyed seven successful years with Liverpool; winning seven trophies during his time at Anfield - the most notable being the dramatic Champions League final victory over AC Milan in 2005.
The 30-year-old joined Roma in 2008 having been displaced in the Liverpool team by Fabio Aurelio and has recently been linked with a shock return to Anfield.
Liverpool are known to have identified the acquisition of a recognised left-back as a priority when the transfer window reopens and have also been linked with Celtic defender Emilio Izaguirre and highly-rated Marseille full-back Taye Taiwo.
