Reds eye French Marv-el

Liverpool are set to secure the signing of French winger Sylvain Marveaux on a Bosman free transfer.

The 24-year-old Rennes player rejected a new contract amid growing interest from a number of European clubs.

Damien Comolli, Liverpool's director of football, moved swiftly to tie up the deal following interest from rival clubs in the Barclays Premier League.

The versatile star offers Liverpool a number of options as he can play on either wing or as an attacking central midfielder.

Marveaux's summer arrival will lead to further speculation about the future of Joe Cole, who was similarly signed without a fee following his release by Chelsea last summer.

Cole has struggled with injury and form and failed to justify the reported £100,000-a-week wages he is earning at Liverpool.
