Rafael Benítez must raise cash to fund a £10 million move for Sunderland forward Kenwyne Jones after the Wearside club made it clear that they would not agree to the player signing a loan deal with Liverpool.
Benítez has identified the Trinidad and Tobago international as his prime target in the remaining two weeks of the transfer window following the loss of Fernando Torres for up to six weeks with a knee injury.
Jones, a £6 million buy from Southampton in August 2007, has scored just six goals for Sunderland this season, but manager Steve Bruce is under no pressure to sell to raise transfer funds.
Bruce is understood to be willing to part with Jones, but only on a permanent basis, forcing Benítez to hope that funds can be raised by the possible sale of Dutch winger Ryan Babel.
Sunderland are monitoring Paraguayan forward Salvador Cabanas after failing to lure Schalk's Kevin Kuranyi to the Stadium of Light.
Harry Redknapp is set to make changes to help end a sequence of poor results against the 'Big Four'. Tottenham visit Liverpool on Wednesday attempting to win at the home of one of the 'Big Four' for the first time in 66 attempts.
Not since Spurs won 2-1 at Anfield in 1993 have they won at Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United or Arsenal and, following the goalless draw against Hull City on Saturday, Redknapp is expected to replace one former Liverpool striker with another.
Peter Crouch, who spent three years at Liverpool, was dropped by Redknapp for the FA Cup tie against Peterborough and Saturday's Premier League game against Hull.
Crouch has started 12 League games this season, scoring four goals, and Redknapp will start him at Anfield in place of Robbie Keane.
The Tottenham manager hinted at a change when he said: "I need to look at what we do against Liverpool. I am not being disrespectful to Robbie but when Crouch came on [against Hull] we suddenly looked more dangerous.
"They put so many bodies in there and it was hard to play through them. When Crouch came on we could miss them out and drop balls up to him and he won headers and now we are coming to them and getting shots on goal."
