Fiorentina are lining up a move for Liverpool target Mamadou Sakho, according to sources in Italy.

The French defender has been on the Reds' radar for a while with Brendan Rodgers desperate to strengthen a back-line weakened by the retirement of Jamie Carragher.

He has brought in Kolo Toure already this summer but further reinforcements are expected.

Sakho is an option, with his future at Paris Saint-Germain unclear.

The 23-year-old Parisian has been at his hometown club since he was 12 but has fallen down the pecking order and is open to a summer departure.

The centre-back knows he needs guaranteed first-team football if he wants to secure a place in the France World Cup squad.

But now Fiorentina have emerged as serious contenders to sign him. The Italian club built a good relationship with PSG after their deal to sign Mohamed Sissoko on loan last season and are hoping any move for Sakho will be well received.
