Liverpool will have to take on AC Milan if they follow up their interest in Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka.
The Swiss international has been earmarked as a possible long-term replacement for current Reds skipper Steven Gerrard.
However, it has emerged that the Italian giants are also keen on the former Basel man, who moved to the Bundesliga last summer in a £7million deal.
Monchengladbach, who currently sit fourth in the German top flight, will be reluctant to sell one of their star players after just one season but a bid in excess of £15million would test the side's resolve.
The 21-year-old was handed his senior international debut by Ottmar Hitzfeld against England at Wembley in 2011 and is rated one of the best young talents in Europe.
