Community facilities are vital for healthy and successful neighbourhoods. North Liverpool communities are amongst the most deprived in the UK and therefore the role played by community centres is even more important in alleviating the stresses and disadvantages faced by residents.
The Vernon Sangster Community Sports Centre (VSCS) was located in a decaying building on the site of the new LFC stadium. Prior to its demolition, LFC worked with its Board, Liverpool City Council and Anfield Youth Club (AYC) to secure funding from Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and Barclays Spaces for Sport/Football Foundation to improve and extend the former AYC buildings on Breckside Park so that sports and other activities could continue. VSCS and AYC formed the Anfield Sport and Community Centre Ltd. to run the new centre and the replacement for the VSCS planned for the new stadium.
Following on from those initial improvements, additional funding via LCC from European Social Funds, means that the ASCC facility now provides state-of-the art facilities for a range of sport and community activities. LFC provides coaching and health programmes at the ASCC site and ASCC are an important partner in LFC's community work.
European funding also enabled the provision of new facilities for the Anfield Breckside Community Council at Holy Trinity Church, Breckside and North Everton Neighbourhood Council on Robson Street, and Kirkdale Community Centre on Stanley Rd.
LFC works with a range of community centres in delivering its community programmes and values its partnerships with them.
