Barry was born in the North-East of England and joined Liverpool from amateur side Bishop Auckland, with whom he had won the FA amateur cup. He played 18 times in the First Division, mostly as a half-back in the second-half of the 1953-54 season, at the end of which the club was relegated to the Second Division. Despite staying at Anfield for several seasons until an eventual transfer to Tranmere Rovers, Barry never established himself in Liverpool's first-team and the 18 games he figured in during his first year at Anfield would never be bettered during any subsequent season.
