A hat-trick for Thierry Henry robbed Liverpool of victory at Highbury on Saturday lunchtime as the French striker once again proved how invaluable he is to Arsene Wenger's team.
Henry struck twice in the second-half to secure a 4-2 win for Arsenal as Arsene Wenger's team bounced back with a vengeance after a quite miserable week.
Liverpool actually went in for the half-time break leading 2-1 after Sami Hyypia had given the Reds the lead with a header after just five minutes and Michael Owen had cancelled out Thierry Henry's 31st minute equaliser with a 42nd minute strike.
At half-time, Gerard Houllier would have been more than pleased with his players who had more than matched the league leaders during a frantic opening 45 minutes. After great first-half performances from Emile Heskey, Owen, Dietmar Hamann, Steven Gerrard and Hyypia, the travelling Liverpool fans could have been forgiven for thinking that they were about to witness Arsenal's first Premiership defeat of the season.
All that was to change within five minutes of the re-start though. First Pires levelled the scores after 49 minutes with a great strike following a neat one-two on the edge of the box and then, a minute later, Henry displayed the sort of skills that earnt him 2nd place in the recent FIFA World Player of the Year awards.
Henry completed his hat-trick after 77 minutes as Arsenal began tearing into the Liverpool defence with ease. After such a great start for the visitors, Arsenal could have ended the game with eight or nine goals as Liverpool's defence totally crumbled. In the end, Arsenal treated the game like a training ground exercise as they humiliated the visitors by playing keep-ball with 40-pass moves.
Just like in October when the two teams met at Anfield, Liverpool outplayed Arsenal at times during the first-half only to allow their opponents to wrap up the points after the break. The Gunners are now 28 points ahead of Liverpool at the top of the table and they've even got a game in hand.
As much as it hurts to say it, the gulf between the two teams has become embarrassing.
Let's hope the three points we've droppedtoday don't come back to haunt us at the end of the season.
