It's about time players starting fighting for the club.
As a Liverpool supporter I have had to endure a lot of abuse lately from friends who support Man U, Arsenal, and even Tottenham! I have always had the utmost belief in the team to be able to turn it around, to show the fighting spirit you just expect from a Liverpool side. Having listened to the game against Blackburn this afternoon, I'm beginning to wonder if the players really do care.
In our recent run we seem to have started every match at a walking pace, only really starting to play with urgency after we've conceded or after what must have been a half-time rollicking from the back room staff. Even after going a goal up against Blackburn this afternoon we just didn't seem to want to go on and finish them off. At the point where we should have used our advantage, we sat back and let them grow in confidence. We were second to almost every ball, that's if we even got there at all. And to wait until the 87th minute to really try and win a match, having given away the lead, just isn't good enough.
Sure, it's understandable that the players are nervous and lacking in confidence but that doesn't stop them playing with passion and commitment, even if it is scrappy.
If we are to have a hope against Arsenal on Sunday, we are going to have to have all 11 players on that pitch fighting with every ounce of strength for the full 90 minutes. If they don't want to do that then maybe it's time to start dropping the players who aren't fully committed, give them a reason to have to play hard rather than being able to assume that if they don't play it's just because they are being rotated. I have no doubt that there are a lot of players in the reserve team, and indeed in the youth teams who would give anything for a chance to step out in the first team like Mellor.
Then maybe we will have a chance of turning this season around and getting something from it. Come on the Reds, you're breaking our hearts at the moment!
