John McMahon admitted he had mixed emotions after seeing his side stay top of the Barclays Premier Reserve League North thanks to a last-gasp equaliser against Manchester City at Prenton Park on Thursday night.
Danish youth international Nikola Saric struck deep into stoppage time to earn McMahon's side a share of the spoils after an enthralling 3-3 draw.
The Reds had led 2-1 but two goals in the space of two minutes saw City take control of the game and go 3-2 up.
However, substitute Saric combined with Daniel Ayala to make it 3-3 and keep the Reds two points clear of City at the top.
"It was a good game from a spectator point of view but from a coaching point of view we are disappointed with the result," McMahon told Liverpoolfc.tv.
"We have mixed feelings really because we thought we had lost the game but we got the goal in injury time and it was a point gained for us.
"The fact that we have not lost the game is a positive for us tonight. When we were 2-1 up we needed another goal to settle us down and get in control of the game but we couldn't get it.
"We were disappointed with the two goals we then conceded. We then found ourselves 3-2 down and we could have ended up feeling sorry for ourselves but we showed good character to come back.
"I was pleased for Nikola to score. He works hard and he has got a good touch and he can push on now. We made a change when Antonio Gomez suggested keeping Daniel Ayala up front. He won the ball and Nikola finished it well.
"It was an inspirational move from Antonio so all credit to him.
"I know we have stayed top of the league and that is nice but it's not what it's all about. Our main aim is player development and if we can continue doing that then that's more pleasing."
Meanwhile, Jay Spearing who netted the opening goal added: "We were very happy to get the goal right at the end because I thought we deserved it.
"It's a long time not having a game since November and we haven't been able to play any friendly games because of the weather so it was nice to get out and get a game."
The Reds No.26 has been a regular substitute for the first team this season and he vowed to continue working hard to try and get another chance.
"I have enjoyed it and it's been a massive change for me compared to last season so I have got to keep working hard and hopefully will get a chance again."
