Liverpool duo Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Leiva have joined Ronaldinho, Kaka and Robinho on the list of superstars left out of Brazil's World Cup squad.

Former Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has been ruthless in selecting the 23 players who will represent the hosts next month.

Chelsea quartet David Luiz, Oscar, Ramires and Willian all made the cut.

Tottenham's Paulinho and fellow midfielder Fernandinho, of Manchester City were also included.

But Coutinho and Lucas were omitted despite having helped Liverpool take the race to the Premier League title into the final day.

Ronaldinho's omission was no great surprise as the 34-year-old - a World Cup winner in 2002 - is winding down an illustrious career in his homeland with Atlético Mineiro and was last capped by Scolari more than a year ago.

Kaka is still operating at a high level with AC Milan in Italy but hasn't played for his country since 2013.

Robinho, Kaka's team-mate at Milan, featured in two friendlies in November but has also been overlooked.

Manchester City fans, who saw Robinho join them for £33million in 2008 but net just 16 goals, will be interested to not that an even bigger Eastlands flop was given the nod by Scolari.

Striker Jo, now playing his club football with Ronaldinho at Atlético Mineiro, cost £19million in 2008 and scored just one Premier League goal.

Goalkeepers: Julio Cesar (Toronto FC, on loan from QPR), Jefferson (Botafogo), Victor (Atletico Mineiro).

Defenders: Marcelo (Real Madrid), Daniel Alves (Barcelona), Maicon (AS Roma), Maxwell and Thiago Silva (both Paris St-Germain), David Luiz (Chelsea), Dante (Bayern Munich), Henrique (Napoli).

Midfielders: Paulinho (Tottenham Hotspur), Ramires (Chelsea), Willian (Chelsea), Oscar (Chelsea), Hernanes (Inter Milan), Luiz Gustavo (Wolfsburg), Fernandinho (Manchester City).

Forwards: Bernard (Shakhtar Donetsk), Neymar (Barcelona), Fred (Fluminense), Jo (Atletico Mineiro), Hulk (Zenit St Petersburg).
