Liverpool have made enquiries for Monaco striker Radamel Falcao but expect the Colombian to join Real Madrid.
The Reds have also been in touch with Paris St Germain regarding a move for Edinson Cavani but were told he is no longer available.
Falcao was wanted by Liverpool on a season-long loan which would cost around £10m with a view to making the deal permanent.
Although Falcao has just recovered from a cruciate ligament injury, Liverpool scouts watched him against Arsenal at the Emirates last week where he scored the decisive goal in their 1-0 friendly win.
Madrid will need to sell one more non-EU player before recruiting Falcao and will consider loaning Angel di Maria to Monaco in return after Paris St Germain pulled out of a deal for the Argentina international.
Manchester United had also been linked with the former Benfica star but are no longer in the running.
