Liverpool face a battle with Juventus to sign Sampdoria's Reto Ziegler.
The 24-year-old was strongly linked with a move to Merseyside earlier this year.
His reputation has burgeoned since leaving Tottenham three years ago. Ziegler arrived at White Hart Lane from Grasshoppers Zurich and initially impressed under Jacques Santini and Martin Jol in his first season, walking away with a young player of the year award.
But he struggled to develop after being sent out on loan to Hamburg and after a futher indifferent spell at Wigan in 2006 he was offloaded to Italy.
He is a versatile player who can play as left-back or left winger, just the type of player Roy Hodgson will need as Liverpool look for a further improvements to his fortunes.
Italian giants Juventus are believed to also be in the running to sign Ziegler, who could be tempted to link up again with his former Sampdoria coach Luigi Del Nieri.
