Liverpool and Everton are ready to battle for the signature of Sampdoria goalkeeper Sergio Romero in January.
The Argentina international's contract at the Serie A club expires at the end of the season and Sampdoria manager Sinisa Mihajlovic could be tempted to cash in on the 27-year-old before then.
Brendan Rodgers' side have been tracking a new goalkeeper all season to challenge Simon Mignolet - who was recently dropped for Brad Jones - for the No.1 jersey, while the Toffees have been rocked by the news that Tim Howard will be out for six weeks with a calf injury.
The American's absence leaves Roberto Martinez with only one experienced goalkeeper, Joel Robles, to call upon as the Spaniard bids to turn around Everton's poor start to the Premier League campaign.
And now, according to Italian newspaper Il Secolo XIX, both Merseyside clubs are preparing offers for Romero having learnt that Sampdoria are keen to sell.
