Scunthorpe-born Dick White arrived at Anfield in November 1955 after having played 133 league matches for his home-town club. He replaced regular centre-half Laurie Hughes at Barnsley on March 10, 1956 and made a further seven appearances before the end of that season. But Hughes missed only one league match in 1956-57 so it wasn't until the following season that Dick became a regular in the side. But he only missed two matches over the next four league seasons, taking his tally of appearances for Liverpool in all competitions to close on the 200 mark. However, Ron Yeats arrived and took over as captain from White who had only been leading Liverpool out for one season. That effectively ended Dick's career as a Liverpool player although White still managed to make further 25 appearances as right back before leaving Liverpool as Division Two champion.
