Liverpool have been linked with a £16.5 million move for Valencia winger Juan Mata.
Valencia are struggling financially and desperately need to raise funds. The club's two most prized assets - David Villa and David Silva - have so far remained at the Mestalla, despite keen interest from the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Barcelona.
However, on Tuesday, Valencia director Fernando Gomez admitted the club may have to sell both, adding: "The club made a great effort to keep our players this summer but our economic situation remains very serious.
"It was a success to keep them, but there comes a point when you can't stand it any more."
Now it looks like Mata will be joining them through the exit door, with Rafa Benitez reportedly willing to pay up to £16.5m for the 21-year-old Spain international.
Mata's current contract is until 2012, but he is only on £10,000 a week and has turned down a new, improved deal.
