Having claimed the League Championship three months earlier, Bob Paisley led his side to Wembley in search of a ninth Charity Shield.
The game brought a debut for substitute David Hodgson in front of 82,500, but the day belonged to Ian Rush after his 32nd minute winner saw off cup holders Tottenham.
Not that the result was a shock to anyone, for here was a team which contained 11 would-be legends: Grobbelaar, Neal, A Kennedy, Lawrenson, Thompson, Hansen, Dalglish, Lee, Rush, Whelan and Souness.
The match was the first of 10 undefeated in a campaign which once again saw the title head to Anfield.
