Liverpool picked up two trophies for the price of one as they beat Tottenham Hotspur after extra-time to clinch the League Cup at Wembley.
The Reds, who'd already seen off Ipswich, Barnsley, Exeter, Middlesbrough and Arsenal, came from behind to beat the Londoners 3-1 and take home both the old Football League Cup and the new Milk Cup trophy.
Spurs had looked capable of maintaining their record of having never lost at Wembley when they took the lead courtesy of Steve Archibald.
However, Ronnie Whelan fired in a late equaliser three minutes from time to take it beyond the 90 minutes before grabbing his second on 111 minutes.
Ian Rush then made sure of victory in the last minute to hand Spurs their first loss in nine domestic cup finals.
Skipper Graeme Souness walked up the famous steps to lift the old three-handled trophy, while former captain Phil Thompson held the new Milk Cup aloft.
Full-back Phil Neal recalls: "The Spurs fans were already toasting their victory when Ronnie Whelan popped up and whipped his goal in to equalise in the dying seconds. It took a good player to do that because Ray Clemence was still a great goalkeeper, he'd kept Spurs in the game.
"Paisley would not let us sit down before extra time started. He was bellowing: 'Get up off your feet, don't them let them see you are tired.' It stemmed from Shankly, who would never let an opponent see that you were weak. After that, we felt we had it in the bag."
