12 August 1989 Liverpool brought Arsenal crashing back down to earth with a bang as they eased to a 1-0 victory over George Graham's champions to retain the Charity Shield at Wembley. Kenny Dalglish's men went into the clash determined to banish the memories of their 2-0 defeat to the Gunners in the previous season's title decider at Anfield and they duly obliged with a performance that warranted more than the one goal they managed courtesy of man of the match Peter Beardsley. The diminutive forward fired home what proved to be the winner on 33 minutes with Arsenal keeper John Lukic keeping the score down with a series of superb saves. The match not only serve as a statement of Liverpool's intentions for the forthcoming season, but it also marked the first appearance of Sweden's international defender Gelnn Hysen, who enjoyed a superb debut at the heart of the defence alongside skipper Alan Hansen.
