Just three months after having a Cup final penalty saved by Dave Beasant, John Aldridge went some way to excorsing any demons in a revenge match against Wimbledon.
Playing alongside the mercurial Peter Beardsley, Aldo hit a brace, including a sublime overhead kick, to cancel out a John Fashanu strike and give Kenny Dalglish his second managerial Charity Shield.
The game, played out in front 54,887 spectators at Wembley, was punctuated by freak thunderstorms, making playing conditions difficult at best.
Unperturbed, Aldo staked his claim for a regular starting role. The pressure would soon be on the Republic of Ireland international following the return from Juventus of another moustached centre-forward, Ian Rush.
Despite going on to net a hat-trick in the first league game of the season away to Charlton, it was a battle Aldo would ultimately lose.
